As this fishing week of the season rolled in, our guests were met by neap tides and a stiff breeze. With some patchy weather predicted for the week, it was a pleasant surprise to find vast schools of milkfish feeding on the surface early in the week. The weather cleared up nicely, and the milkfish had all the boats outside to test their luck with these incredible fish. It didn’t take long for the Argentinians to get stuck in. By mid-way, through the week, the whole crew made up of Carlos Cortez, Edgard Bernaus, Hernan Pereyra, Patricio Lacarusso, Sebastian Jance, Leonardo Llaneza, Lizardo Marulanda, and Kevin McDevitt had got their hands on a milk.
As always, the triggerfish quickly became a group favorite, and Lizardo, Edgard, Hernan, Patricio, and Kevin all landed their first-ever triggers. Kevin’s fish was an exceptional specimen, with a massive 55cm yellow margin that gave an excellent account of itself.
The GT of the week belonged to Sebastian. Drifting through one of the channels on the pushing tide, Sebastian spotted a high-riding giant. He made a long cast, and a few big pops of his popper had the monster charging for his fly with the perfect hook set, and a few grueling minutes later, Sebastian landed his 118 cm trophy!
Most of the group with us this week were accomplished permit fishermen, but one man stood out. Before coming to Cosmo, Carlos had 119 permit to his name. He managed to land his 120th permit this week with us, and what a way to get it. A monster 75 cm indo-pacific permit to add to his collection.
The story of the week happened on the very first day on the remote tropical island, however. After both Patricio and Hernan had landed a milkfish early in the morning, they ran to the flats for lunch. Before they could open their lunch, they were interrupted by a pair of permit. After a patient stalk, Patricio made his shot, and his fly was inhaled. He landed a monster 77 cm indo-pacific permit, the biggest of the season so far. With a milk and a permit in the bag before lunch, there was one thing in mind, the Golden Grand Slam! With a quick bonefish session, it didn’t take long for both Hernan and Patricio to land a bonefish each. It was off to find a willing triggerfish, and it seemed as though the stars were lining up. A hungry mustache trigger happily obliged, and Patricio had his first trigger. The hunt for a GT was now on. While searching for a GT, Hernan quietly picked up his first mustache triggerfish. As the clock wound down and with a few chances at some weary GTs, it just was not to be. But a Super Slam and a Flats Slam on the first day on the same boat was still a fantastic day on the water.
Later in the week, Hernan also managed to fool his first Indo-Pacific permit to add to the tally. All in all, there were some great catches this week. The biggest GT on the flats so far this season, the biggest triggerfish of the season, the biggest permit of the season, and the most milkfish in a week this season. This week will be tough to beat with some good fishing and some good laughs.
