The fly fishing week at Astove Atoll started off with some winds still blowing from the southeast and spring tide. The tackle was set up on arrival, and a brief rundown on what to do and what to expect on the water was given. Everybody with rearing to go!
On day one, we had some excellent fishing! Tom and Chris started their day off with some trigger fishing, and each got one. Shortly after they each got their triggers, Tom still had the trigger rod in his hands and did not have time to change the rod when he had a shot at giant trevally. He managed to land a 65 cm GT on his nine wt. Meaning, Tom got his Flats Slam all in the nine wt. Mike also managed giant trevally, which he caught in the mouth of the lagoon, his measuring an impressive 65 cm. Shiloh was also on the trigger hunt, and after losing one in the morning, he redeemed himself that afternoon by getting a giant trigger.
As the week progressed, the weather came in a bit, we had some overcast weather with some heavy wind and rain, but it did not stop Shiloh and Nick from having a once in a lifetime experience where they got seven GTs, and unfortunately lost 5.
In the middle of the week, Mike decided to spend some time on the bonefish hunt, and he had some fantastic bone fishing in the lagoon, landing about 40 bones in three days, and the biggest was a six-pound bonefish.
On day seven, it all came together for Shiloh with landing a 45 cm permit in the morning that afternoon, they came across a group of GTs, and he got himself a 70 cm GT, and on the way home, he quickly stopped and got the bonefish to complete his Flats Slam. Chris also managed a 86 cm GT early that morning.
The last three days were on the tough side with the weather, so the guys did some dredging and got some groupers!
