ONE ANGLER LANDED 2 PERMITS IN ONE AFTERNOON

The fly fishing week at Astove started with some strong winds still blowing and some exciting neap tides going into springs at the end of the week. After the tackle was all set up and a brief rundown of how to present the fly and what to do when the fish eats, all the anglers rushed out to the flats to practice and get the rust off for the first days of fishing.

On the first afternoon, the guys went to the lagoon to do some bonefishing. For some of the guests, it was their first bonefish on fly. Scott left the bones and went after the permit that afternoon, and this plan paid off as he landed his first Indo-Pacific permit that afternoon.

Mid-week conditions improved drastically with the wind dying down and fishing numbers going up, with James going out and managing to get an impressive Flats Slam with a GT of 65 cm and a beautiful giant triggerfish, and he closed the account with the bonefish.

On day five, Josef managed to land himself a GT in the morning and then proceeded on the hunt for triggerfish. He managed to get in a good cast, and the fish did not ask any questions. He landed a trigger, and then he was onto the bonefish hunt. He ended up with a tally of 20+ bonefish for the afternoon!

Alex took on the lagoon for the last two days at the end of the week, and it was well worth it! He landed a 94 cm GT and a 75 cm in no longer than 20 minutes – he was still taking photos of the first fish when the second fish was showing himself back out of the water trying to eat bonefish in the shallows. James went for a nice surf walk along the east and got an excellent 75 cm GT. They had an afternoon of spotting lots of fish; however, they were swimming just out of casting range.

On the last day, Alex managed to get himself two permit! Alex has been fishing for them for over three years, and every time, they get the better of him, but this time he managed to get the better of them and landed a 46 cm permit, and shortly after, he landed another 40 cm permit.
